Days Out: Spring Barn Farm, Lewes
During the Christmas break, I realised that there are so many wonderful things to do nearby and I rarely plan a thing. We’ve got stuck in a bit of a rut of going to the same parks and cafes, visiting the same seafront spots. I suppose when Emma was a little younger and I had far more enthusiasm, she wasn’t quite as steady on her feet. But now we have no excuse! So our new mini challenge (challenge is much less of a commitment that the word ‘resolution’) is to discover a few places around Sussex and feature it on the blog every other Wednesday.

Emma has just discovered the fun in animal sounds and thanks to our favourite book ‘Dear Zoo’ – we have mastered, dog, snake, lion and monkey plus cat (thanks Postman Pat). She also shouts ‘baaaaaird’ (bird) whenever she sees anything flying in the air so I thought a trip to the farm was long overdue. Spring Barn Farm is one of our favourites; located just outside Lewes, it’s only a 15 minutes drive for us and great fun for all the family. It’s not the biggest farm but really well laid out and there’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained for hours. I also love that there is an indoor soft play area and cafe, if the rain decides to descend on us.

There are lots of animals to see and Emma was completely mesmerised as soon as we arrived. The outside area of the farm has the llamas, sheep, horses and chickens up on a big hill, with the play area and trampoline at the bottom. It’s a good idea to bring warm clothes though, as it can get really windy up on the hill and a little bit chilly – the farm is right in the middle of a valley so it’s very open without shelter. We always start our visit with a walk around the animals outside, and then head to the play area. I love how the play area caters for all ages, as our 13 year old loves it too. There are swings for babies and older children, go-karting, a zip wire and separate trampolines for both age groups too.

Just by the entrance, there is covered area to see the rabbits, guinea pigs and budgies, so we headed there next. Emma had great fun following the budgies fly around in their cage. She gets so excited by it! It’s in this area that the farm hosts ‘Meet the Animals’ sessions, which is always a big hit. It’s so lovely to see that as she gets older, she really recognises animals a bit more and is so interested in them. I also think it’s been great for her confidence to be with animals and learn to be gentle – there’s always the temptation for her to poke them in the eye!

Soon enough it was time for a little break for all of us so we went to see the soft play area. James was brilliant and went to play with her in the soft play, giving us parents a little break – and he also had a go on the big slide, which he loves. The soft play area is really good, and there is plenty for all ages with a little den as well as slides and things to climb on. We managed to have a bit of lunch as well while the kids played and I thought the food was really good value for money at £20 for the 4 of us.

It’s not the first time we’ve been to Spring Barn Farm and I’d highly recommend it if you are visiting the area. The cost is very similar to other farms in the area (£7-£8.50 for 2 years old+ depending on the time of year and under 2’s go for free) but I think with so much to do there, it’s a reasonable price for a lovely day out. We can’t wait to visit again soon!

Such a good ‘challenge’ to set yourself it’s always surprising what is just on your door step. I love the farms local to us, it’s very similar to this one except for the bigger kid play areas. Looks like you had an amazing day! Thanks for linking up to #familyfun

Your challenge for 2017 sounds fantastic, I look forward to reading all your exciting adventures over the coming months. I bet it’s lovely watching Emma experience a farm now she’s really enjoying learning about the animals. That park sounds fab too, nothing beats a park that keeps the eldest and youngest happy at the same time! Those animals all look adorable I bet it was lovely being able to get up close and personal with some of them!
