Creating A New Blog Look

Whilst we were away holidaying our socks off, I decided to take a couple of weeks away from the blog and surprised myself how much I needed it. One thing I realised too, was that I wanted to change the header on my blog. I’m not sure how this came about as I have always loved the illustration that was done for me, but I suppose it just doesn’t feel quite right for me now that my blog has evolved a bit more. So I decided to have a think about alternatives, and the fun really began!

What’s my blog about again?

As I began to think about it, I got really stuck. How come I can’t pinpoint what my blog is about? Is this a huge red flag that the blog is too much of an eclectic collection of my thoughts and feelings about being a mum? One thing I did know though is that it’s more than what my illustrated header suggests…in fact the truth of it all is that we don’t often all sit on the beach together. It’s about juggling it all, working and being the best mum I can be. It’s about getting it wrong sometimes and not feeling bad about it. It’s about those ordinary moments and remembering that amidst it all, our life is pretty extraordinary.

I’ve been reading a lot about niches in blogging lately and felt so much better to hear that it’s OK if my blog is a bit of a mix and decided that a text only header would be the way forward for me. The easiest part was picking one of my favourite Instagram pictures as a backdrop – the shade of blue is one of my favourites. I think that the text only goes really well with the theme of my blog, as it’s quite minimalist – I’m so pleased! But in the meantime I have saved the artwork I had illustrated previously, as I would love to get it framed at some point and put in Emma’s room.

Deciding on a Font

To make my header as unique as possible, I started scouring for font to use. Initially I wasn’t sure where to start with it – I had heard that Creative Market is a fab place for this, so begun there. But it is literally a minefield of fonts – categorised into things I didn’t even understand like Serif, Sans Serif, Display, Slab Serif, Non Western as well as a whole world of others too. Perhaps there is such a thing as too much choice…but eventually I decided on a handwritten one and picked a few out that I liked. I do think Creative Market is awesome as you can type in your text and test it out before buying.

A Tagline to Sum It All Up

When I began my blog, I never had a tagline. I think it was because I wasn’t entirely sure where I was going with it all. I had started by taking a few pictures of Emma and her buddies in the park…and now it is something totally different. I like to think it’s a little bit of me, as well as all about Emma and our family. But summing it all up in 8 words or less, that’s a different thing all together and certainly not my forte!

Inevitably I became really stuck, trying to think of that all important tagline to sum up my blog. I began searching everything with a tagline for inspiration, when my other half came up with ‘Misadventures in Motherhood’. He is very good at this sort of thing, so I was really grateful that he stepped in! I absolutely loved it and tweaked it a little bit as you can see above…I really like it and hopefully it will be a good descriptor of what to expect from my writing before you begin reading.

What Do You Think?

So what do you think of the new look for Bridie By The Sea? Let me know in the comments below if you’ve given your blog a bit of an overhaul too…I’m sensing lately that it’s a common theme with the new year coming up. I was very lucky with work with the talented Emma from Daydreams and Ice-Creams and can’t thank her enough for her help! Check out her Facebook and Instagram pages for a little peek into her illustrated designs…

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post, I just really loved working with Emma!

I think it looks really fab! Love the background image and the font was a great choice. I loved your old header but I understand why you felt the need to change and the new one is great x

Thank you! I loved the old header too, but time for a little change! x

Love the new header – it looks great! I think it’s important sometimes to reassess what your blog is about and whether the look reflects that. I probably need to have a look at mine in the new year too. #DreamTeam

It gives your blog a totally different feel – more sophisticated somehow! I love the blue in the photo too and it really dominates the look, which makes me think of the sea and all the connotations that go with it. It’s really fab! I love your thought of framing your original design for Emma, as that embodied a particular time in your lives. Have a lovely Christmas. Alison x #DreamTeam

I am loving the new look! I love a photo header that shows your life, and I think this image sums up your blog perfectly. I have been thinking about having a rebrand, I do like my blog look, but there’s just a niggling doubt that it’s not quite right. I have also been looking into blogging niches and have decided that I don’t have one, but I think I’m happy with that #DreamTeam.

I gave my blog an overhaul last January; changed the look, changed the format and layout and even changed a bit of the content. My niche had been strictly about homeschooing my three boys but more and more I felt like I wanted a little bit of ME in there. I love the photo you chose and the font too. The header looks very nice.

After five months I am getting to the point where I want to make minor changes to mine but am scared to leave ,y beloved font.

Bridget, when people change their headers I wish they’d include a shot of the old header in the post. When a change is made, the old one goes completely out of my head! So I can’t tell you that I like it better than the old one, but I can definitely say I like it — it’s gorgeous!

  9. December 20, 2016 / 4:07 pm

I love it! I think it’s way more modern and stylish and well, you than the old header (although this was cute!) This is also one of all time favourite pictures of yours from IG. Love love love it. x

Love your new header and think it represents a new you. A fresh new header ready for a new year! #DreamTeam

  11. December 20, 2016 / 7:46 pm

I love it! Lovely picture and fits beautifully with your blog #dreamteam

  12. December 20, 2016 / 9:48 pm

I LOVE the new header!! I was all set to have one done by the lady who did yours and in the meanwhile Gaz designed mine, just as a “stopgap”, but when my turn came round for my header to be drawn I realised that actually, my blog header was already perfect for my blog. I think finding the right header is really important, yours looks amazing! #dreamteam

  13. December 20, 2016 / 10:21 pm

It looks good and gives the reader a good idea of what to expect without giving everything away. I think you did a great job.

I’ve been thinking about the next evolution of our blog banner. Since it has a picture of Peachy in it, I always knew I would have to update it regularly as Peachy grows. I think we can get away with using what we have for a little while longer, but an update is in the works. Even if just in my mind for the time being. #DreamTeam

A change is as good as a rest, and if you had both, then that has to be a winner! #dreamteam

  15. December 20, 2016 / 11:25 pm

I like it! Blogs need to evolve with you and this feels right. I keep tweaking mine and I’ve bought a new theme…not to change the look drastically but more because my current theme is slow and glitchy #dreamteam

  16. December 20, 2016 / 11:44 pm

Love the new look! My header is text only and I’ve toyed with a tag line for a while but couldn’t settle on what so decided not too.

Blog design is really hard isn’t it!

  17. December 21, 2016 / 3:08 am

As a graphic designer, I love that you put to time and thought into your font! So many people don’t. 🙂 And it looks great!

  18. December 21, 2016 / 8:17 am

I think your new look is really striking, but still warm and friendly. It captures the heart of your blog – just perfect. #DreamTeam x

  19. December 21, 2016 / 7:48 pm

Loving the new header! Have a lovely Christmas #dreamteam

  20. December 21, 2016 / 11:03 pm

This is inspiring to read as I really want/need to sort mine out too! I think yours is simple but still full of personality. Are you still on WordPress? Think I need to message you some Q’s!

  21. December 22, 2016 / 3:57 pm

This is so lovely! I love your new blog look and the tagline too. It is gorgeous! I have also just gave my bog a new look too… but still searching for a tagline. Very inspiring post. #DreamTeam

  22. December 22, 2016 / 4:02 pm

I think it looks fab, it’s not fussy and looks lovely

  23. December 24, 2016 / 10:15 pm

I was only looking at your blog the other day thinking “Oh I wonder why Bridie’s changed the header image?” and now I know! I love it, it looks fresh and bright and as you say is maybe a bit more ‘you’. I really love the font too! Thanks so much for letting me co-host #DreamTeam again this month, I’m really loving it!

Oh and PS, I work for a graphic design firm, our name has a font related slant and even I don’t know what all the different font types are!!

  24. January 6, 2017 / 9:02 pm

I really like it! (though I also loved your illustrated one before and was going to ask who did that one?). I want to change my header/logo too and I’m researching who to help me with so I’ll check Emma out. I think you’re right that text only ones can work. Mine is text but with symbols beneath it – I just used a font with symbols to create it but I worry it’s a bit child like and not professional enough.. But design is so subjective. I’d love your thoughts on it if you get chance to look! x
