Family | Staying Fit Together

Joint sports units for children and parents make them fit and train how to interact with one another. But which sports are best? Regular exercise promotes health – this applies to children as well as adults. But many parents hardly have any time for their families in addition to their job and everyday life. Then doing sports often seems impossible. It can be a solution if adults and children keep fit together. But which sport is suitable for this? And how do you ensure that children are not overwhelmed and adults are not under-challenged?

Children have to move around a lot and in a variety of ways

“It is especially important for children to be active and to try out different forms of movement, as exercise is a basic building block for healthy physical and mental development,” says Prof. Ingo Froböse, head of the Center for Health at the German Sport University in Cologne.

How much exercise do children and parents need?

The daily activity of 60-90 minutes is desirable, with training or playing at least with moderate intensity. Above all, coordination skills are to be promoted. The fitness expert recommends that adults, too, need a balance of at least 2.5 hours of exercise per week in addition to their mostly sedentary lifestyle.

Exercising together is good for a parent-child relationship

Joint activities not only strengthen the heart, circulatory system, and muscles but also train people to interact with one another. You get to know the needs and desires of your children better, and the children in turn benefit from spending time with their parents. “This deepened sense of community can then also be transferred to other areas of life.

Finding the right sport for everyone

Which sport is practiced is of secondary importance. A playful approach is important, and fun shouldn’t be neglected. Good options are group bike tours or inline skating in quiet areas. But catching games or larger sports games such as soccer, basketball or badminton are also suitable. Or if you like bowling sport,  you can visit bowlingadvisor to help you learn about bowling. It is crucial that everyone involved feels like it.

Running around counts as a sport, too

Children can also be built into fitness exercises, for example as an additional weight for squats. Another example is jumping jacks, where the children are best just to join in. So that the little ones stay motivated, they should be able to suggest exercises or running variants themselves. Just romping around and imitating animal walks is also considered a sporting activity.

Encourage children to exercise at an early age

Children should be infected with the movement virus. The sooner that happens, the higher the likelihood that they will remain active in the long term”.
