A Kitchen Lived In : That Perfect Insta Shot

Recently I wrote about my thoughts around Instagram and how it makes me compare myself to other families. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gorgeous snaps in idyllic settings but I also love those real shots too! I received an overwhelming response to the post, which varied from those who felt the same as I do, to those who love sharing their best bits. Then there were a few who explained quite rightly that they love both types of photos, but understand the work that goes into the perfect ones.

So this week I put it to the test. Emma and I got in the kitchen and had a go at baking for the first time, as part of Wren Kitchen’s A Kitchen Lived In Campaign. We were given a huge box of amazing kitchen utensils and gadgets as well as kitchen based toys for Emma, which she is loving! In particular, she has found a new love for the plastic spoon we were gifted…I think it makes her feel like a big girl as it’s a much larger spoon than I’d usually use. So together, we baked chocolate chip cupcakes and she absolutely loved it! It was a really fun thing to do together, and she found it fascinating dipping her hands in the mixture…sensory play right?

The lovely team at Wren Kitchen have been working hard on a wonderful project called ‘Little Kitchen – Big Ideas’, which I think is pretty amazing for mums like me who struggle to know what to cook in the kitchen. My little lady was always a brilliant eater until she hit 10 months old, and then BAM fussy eating began. Every meal is completely unpredictable – some can go amazingly well, while others not so much…so to have all these ideas on tap is just invaluable to me. Their blog is full of videos and recipes to get your little ones involved in the kitchen, and to make mealtimes fun and enjoyable. There is also a free download-able e-book with wonderful recipes too – we tried the brownies and they were delicious. You can keep up to date with the campaign by following #LittleKitchen on social media, so do have a little look.

The verdict on getting those Insta-perfect shots while baking with toddlers? Hard work it is! It took two of us trying to distract Emma and coax her out of having a complete meltdown. After we took some pictures, I had a look at whether I could take some of the shots onto Instagram, despite the absolute chaos we had caused in the kitchen. I think it was a success and here’s a few pictures from our afternoon together making yummy cakes…

Emma in the kitchen looks into the camera with chaos and mess all around her Birds eye view shot of cakes in the kitchen, with Emma at top of the shot looking disgustingly at a chocolate chip Emma crying and throwing a tantrum with chaos all around her in the kitchenSo after our fun escapades creating these shots, I’ve learned that just as someone mentioned to me – these perfect Instagram shots are much more hard work that they look! For me it’s all about balance, and enjoying the moment together regardless of the mess and chaos (within reason of course). A huge thank you to the team at Wren Kitchen for collaborating together in this fun challenge!

Your kitchen looks real and happy, nothing posed or ‘done’. That’s all that matters! #tribe xx

That looks fun!
And here’s to real life, not the insta life eh?!
How exhausting would it be to live in perfect Insta? I’d need assistance sil vous plait!!
The baking looks fun, its always such an arseache to get the cook on with the kids, same as getting the paint out, but THEY LOVE IT. so well worth the effort in the end.

Opps I think my first comment has been deleted! silly me… anyway I was just saying how exhausting the Insta life would be and I’d need an entourage to make it happen!
Cooking is one of those ball ache activities to me, alongside painting. But the kids always LOVE IT, so I guess it well worth the extra effort really…
love this post xx

I love how you’ve captured the reality of fun times spent with your daughter. Can’t wait to be able to do some baking with Pea – although it’s several years off yet! #coolmumclub

Cooking and baking is always a contained mess. Once you throw kids into the mix anything can happen! I love the overlay of the Instagram pic over the “reality” behind it. Once the weather cools down I want to start doing more baking with my kids – my kitchen is tiny and I get frustrated easily when baking by myself. Put the kids in there with me and I might just go crazy! But we’ll make it work. Great post!

I love this! The perfect photo versus the reality – but the reality looks fun and I love your daughter’s faces – actually perfect in themselves 🙂 Alison x #coolmumclub

I love baking with my kids also and they love the mess. The more messy the kitchen gets the more fun they seem to have 😉 looks like Emma had lots of fun and that’s all that matters really. Also I’m sure you could have got a perfectly beautiful shot if you really wanted too. Love all these though x #ablogginggoodtime

I definitely agree with you, I love scrolling through my Instagram feed and seeing lots of beautiful pictures but I don’t think I could every achieve them. I do love the real shots too – it lets me know that, hey it’s perfectly normal to not be able to tame your toddler into the perfect pose or have the most magnificent lighting or tidy background haha! It looks like you had a lot of fun at all costs and that’s the important bit 🙂 #coolmumclub

I love these pictures and how true to life they are. My little bear has a drawer of his own plastic kitchen utensils and dishes that he loves to play with. I’ll admit I haven’t ben brave enough to let him help me really cook yet. He mostly gets to sprinkle things. I love that she was given her own set of utensils! Its sounds like a really cool program. #Ablogginggoodtime #TribalLove

There’s a reason my instagram is mostly selfies or stuff I’ve crocheted. My daughter is 7 now so baking isn’t so hard!

The last picture is potentially the best picture I have ever seen, I just delights me..not that she is sad but because it just life…and I also like the one where you have climbed on a chair. Leo HATES having his picture taken and is always like mum why are you taking one hundred pictures…he has taken to pulling a kind of grimace smile…Wrens kitchens sound fab!
