Our 1st Family Holiday

I’ve been feeling a little flat since we arrived home from our holiday…I suppose that’s the sign that it was a great one! And that’s exactly what it was, a whole week of bliss, time together away from the stress of the housework and that broken drawer that we just have not got round to fixing yet. It was the most peaceful and relaxing holiday too, which is just what we needed after months of running around! It’s always lovely to come home, but feels like the holiday bubble has been burst.

My other half is from a village in County Westmeath and in the years we have known each other, he describes it to me as the unfashionable part of Ireland. The bog that you drive through to get to somewhere interesting (that last part is verbatim!) – it is exactly half-way between Dublin and Galway. I was intrigued, having only been to Ireland twice before; once to Dublin and another time to Kilrush in County Clare. Even though they were both flying visits, I always thought of Ireland as peaceful and the ultimate relaxation away from my busy city job.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned once, twice or many times before that this was the first time Emma had been in a plane and we were all very nervous about it. I’m going to be honest and say that the flight over to Ireland was pretty bad…Emma screamed the whole way and was pretty distressed by it all. The flight was ridiculously hot and even after stripping her off into her nappy, she wound herself up so much that we just had to ride it out until the flight was over. Thankfully, just as we were landing, she fell asleep, which was such a relief as she hadn’t slept all morning with the excitement of being on the train and everything being very new! I was so relieved to arrive and put the horror journey behind us. We got going to Westmeath and arrived in record time…and here are the highlights from our family holiday together:

This was the first time we’d spent a full week all together and I saw day-by-day how much Emma loved having her brother by her side. It was so lovely to see, as I know she misses him when he goes to school or has other plans with friends. I could see that bond develop more and more, and it warmed my heart. She also said ‘James’ for the first time, which was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. And once she learnt the word…that’s all she wanted to say so poor James was called to action constantly!

Even Emma thought the Guiness was pretty tasty!

Ever since my trip to Dublin, I’ve known that I actually like Guiness…but only in Ireland. It tastes much smoother and I drank only Guiness this time, when we were out and about. I absolutely loved it, and only wish we had the same over here! It’s probably a good thing now that I think about it 🙂

Ireland is just breathtaking. As we were driving around, I just couldn’t believe how beautiful it is and we had to stop a few times so James and I could get out and take some pictures of the scenery. We visited the Slieve Bloom Mountains first and loved taking pictures in the blustering wind and rain…the sky was so stormy and I thought it was stunning. We even found the famous Giltraps cafe with a huge courtyard for Emma to run around in before the rain fell, so everyone was happy! A few days later, we then visited Clonmacnoise, which is a Monastic site. It’s located in County Offaly and right by the River Shannon – it was a beautiful day out and we had a lovely time rambling around.

An unexpected drink with an old friend of my other half’s turned into one of the highlights of the whole trip…we were invited to go up the hill on a quad bike to have a look at the scenery. We were right next to Coolatore House, which is where Michael Jackson stayed for a few months at one point, whilst working at a music recording studio nearby. You can see why too, as it’s so quiet and must be the perfect private location for celebs. Unfortunately Emma couldn’t come but the three of us went up and all had a go – it was the most exhilirating thing I’ve ever done and I absolutely loved it, despite being petrified at first. Afterwards, James even had a go on a tractor and the whole morning was such a memorable one for all of us.

Our first holiday together meant more to me than I could ever describe – it was time together to really talk and spend quality time having fun. I think we all needed the break and some time to really relax. I especially loved having the time to chat properly to Bunny and Jim, my other half’s parents, as when we last met, Emma was only 6 weeks old and I was so pre-occupied with everything. Plus it was a huge break for me, not having to do any cooking at all, and we were completely spoiled with the best food and desserts I have ever eaten! In fact, I think that’s why getting back home to reality has been such a huge crash, as we all slowly wean ourselves off eating meringue and cream every day hmmm, so delicious! It was a perfect week together and for me, fashionable or unfashionable, I wouldn’t have changed a second.

I’m glad you had a nice holiday! We just got back from Ireland too and it was lovely, though we were over on the Inishowen Peninsula. We had mixed weather, but that was to be expected. The best part was just watching the Popple run around in big, open spaces, which she loved. #stayclassymama

Ahh such lovely pictures!! There’s something so nice about switching off and really getting away from it all for a bit. Ireland sounds like a fab place to do that! Good job the flight was a short one though! X
