What’s In My Room 101?

Room 101 is a favourite in our house – I mean, who doesn’t love that show! We’ve recently made it into a family game too where my stepson is the gameshow host and we all play along….hours of fun. So I thought it was time I shared some of my favourites here – things that wind me up a little bit and I definitely wouldn’t mind throwing into my own Room 101!

So without further ado:

1 – Cats

This is number one for a reason and I know this will inevitably cause offence to any number of people who own a cat or used to own a cat or who’s parents have a friendly cat that I would love. #sorrynotsorry I find them calculating mean, and a little bit scary if I’m totally honest. And before you ask, it’s all cats and I’m not willing to discuss the irrationality of this one.

2 – Jay cloths

I have a part-joke, part-‘this is deadly serious’ ongoing debate with my other half. Sponges vs Jay cloths. He can’t get enough of a Jay cloth but I can’t stand them…even the thought of a wet Jay cloth makes me shudder. It’s a very boring debate that we often have but definitely throwing these bad boys in Room 101!

3 – It’s ask not aks

It started a few years back, I heard a teenager say ‘aks’ on the bus, and for a moment I thought I hadn’t heard correctly. Then it happened again and again, to the point that I think I heard it once on a rap song too. To me, it’s the equivalent of mistaking your for you’re – it’s wrong and I wish it would be stopped.

4 – Teabags in the sink

This is probably my biggest household related pet peeve and I once moved out of a flatshare as my lovely flatmate just couldn’t stop hurling the teabags into the sink. The bin was right there! And quite frankly, if you have a tenacious need to avoid putting them in the bin, you need to invest in a teabag holder. Let’s keep things civilised.

5 – Watercooler talk

Having recently gone back to work, I was reminded of the small talk that goes on at various times throughout the day. In the lift, making a cup of tea, at the photocopier. I am so bad at it! It makes me feel very nervous and I have been known to delay my printing needs by 10 minutes to ensure I don’t have to engage in the chit chat…anti-social, me?!

Room 101 - teabags in the sink

So there you have it, my Room 101 and boy that was therapeutic! Hope you enjoyed reading my little rants and let me know in the comments below what you would throw in yours if you had the chance. Big thanks to my pal Jane at Maflingo who gave me this fab idea – do go and check out her post too.

Ha ha, I love this idea. I’m a cat lover I’m afraid but I can totally understand why people don’t like them. I’m totally with you on the last three though, especially ‘aks’, that one drives me up the wall!

Haha!!! I completely agree on the cat and J Cloth front. My husband goes mad about tea bags. I would add dogs and snot.

  3. October 11, 2016 / 7:07 am

I’m with you on the Jay cloths – just use a sponge, FFS! I also hate those little scrubbing brushes – they aren’t nearly as effective as sponges, but that’s all that some people use to wash their dishes! Madness. My husband is always throwing tea bags in the sink and it drives me nuts – there’s no need when there’s a perfectly good bin nearby. #DreamTeam

This posts made me laugh! I’ve never understood why people just don’t put their teabags straight in the bin! I used to love cats, but not so much these days. They’re always a bit unfriendly and aloof if they aren’t your own. #DreamTeam

Pahahahaaaa! This made me laugh! I love this post and Room 101 too! Definitely agree about the J cloth thing. My mum uses a dishcloth (one of those white ones that ALWAYS smells) and I think they’re horrendous. Cats though? Really? Not allowed! Thanks for making me chuckle this morning 🙂

  9. October 11, 2016 / 9:50 am

I’m with you on the cat thing! I just don’t trust cats and always think they are up to something! And tea bags in the sink? Ohhh that would drive me insane!! I’ve never heard of aks? I would put bae in room 101, that does my head in!!! #dreamteam

Omg, are you actually me?! I agree with all of these! My husband says aks and it bugs me so much! He always complains that I correct his speak (he also says “his” instead of “he’s”) but I can’t help it, it’s a compulsion. He also puts teabags in the sink instead of the bin!! And since returning to work, I’m so awkward with small talk, it makes me come across as really rude sometimes! I actually listen out to make sure the kitchen is empty before I go and make my tea #sociallyawkward. Great post, thanks for making me laugh! #DreamTeam

I’d never before given much thought to being offended by a jay cloth but now you mention it, they’re grim beasts! They always smell of damp after a day as well. Also dislike teabags in sinks and kitchen chat. Hmm well I do have a cat but he’s literally been cat nabbed by a neighbour who feeds him gammon and cream so can I throw her into room 101 please?

  12. October 11, 2016 / 11:09 am

Brilliant post. I’m rubbish at small talk which must make look rude sometimes. I’m really not, just busy. I’m to, a sponge user, and tea bags on the sink it just gross. I do love my cat though even if he does look like he’s plotting to kill me all the time. X

  13. October 11, 2016 / 11:52 am

The ‘street’ talk thing is totally gross. I remember my Mum hearing Damage sing ‘aks’ in their version of Beautiful Tonight and getting livid about it! I get it now #dreamteam

I have a cleaning job and the person that I clean for leaves their teabags in the sink ALL THE TIME! Noooo! I’ve never come across the ‘aks’ though. Aks?! It took me many minutes of saying this to even get my head around it. What in the world? Completely agree with that one getting locked down in Room 101. Sounds like such fun making this into a game. I don’t think my list would ever end however haha! #DreamTeam

My cat is definitely calculatingly mean and scary but that’s kind of why I love her. The dog is not quite as keen. If we’re talking grammar I’d like to get rid of ‘get off of’ and ‘could/would/should of’. No no no. #DreamTeam

    This is a great idea.

I’ve never really thought about it before but this sounds like a great game to play in the house. I’ve seen it a few times and really enjoyed the show. I’m the same with the teabags. #DreamTeam

Teabags in the sink?! Arrghhh *pulls hair out* – I can’t stand that either and also plates with left-over bits not scraped off the plate before it goes in the sink… I.. HATE.. THAT! Lol – I do have to say with the whole ‘aks/ask’ thing it doesn’t bother me as much because I hear a lot of people that get their grammar mixed up like using the word ‘brought’ when it should be ‘bought’ as it they’ve just paid for something.. I tried correcting the person but they were adamant that I was wrong and they were using the right term. -_- Great post Bridie! 🙂 #DreamTeam

  29. October 13, 2016 / 4:49 pm

Haha this is so much fun! I agree you should make it a tag/challenge thing. I especially agree with the the ask not aks, and probably many other grammatical errors which drive me crazy! #DreamTeam

  30. October 14, 2016 / 9:32 am

Hahaha water cooler chat sucks, is it bad that I have gone to get water and completely ignored someone? lol oh well I’ll be deemed a bitch I guess. I also do not like cats, they are very calculating, perfect word to describe a cat. The tea thing is weird, I haven’t really experienced this but that would really annoy me, the sink is usually really close to the trash anyway right?! Thanks for sharing with #StayClassyMama!

  32. October 14, 2016 / 8:04 pm

I luuuurve this! Totally with you on most of these too. “Aks” makes my teeth itch. I also hate “I should of”. No. You shouldn’t “of” anything. “Of” is not a verb. Grrrrrr! I would also have to add my two irrational hated objects. Coat-hangers and cling-film. Both of them get tangled / stuck onto other things and themselves far too easily and it makes the vein in my head want to explode. Chuck em in!!! Great post and love the idea! #DreamTeam x

I have cats, but am a dog person and a bunny person more. My fav cat I have acts like a dog though, I know you hate them, my mums the same, but this cat Avari is hilarious she hangs out with the dogs and even prefers the dog food she is so weird. I agree with the tea bags, it is strange to me why if the bin is there you still put them in a sink, very strange. I haven’t heard of room 101 so this was new to me #dreamtaem
