3 Months Later…A Few Reflective Thoughts

A few days ago my little blog turned 3 months, which seems like such a small milestone compared to some of the beautiful blogs I read daily. However to me, getting to 3 months is an achievement in itself – I read somewhere that at this time a lot of blogs don’t continue, so in the back of my mind I thought I might magically run out of inspiration to write. But I’m still here!

This coincided with an amazing weekend at BritMums Live and with all the inspirational food for thought, it left me in a bit of a reflective mood. It made me think about why I am writing this blog and what I want out of it. It made me think properly about my niche – the question I have been avoiding. So here’s a few thoughts on the last 3 months, if you can allow me to be utterly self-indulgent…

laptop

Blogging is cathartic

When I started my blog, I was feeling very lost as a new mum and wasn’t sure what I was doing with my life really! I had come from a career in a very intense working environment to motherhood – totally different, though equally challenging. I’ve loved creating something that is all mine, my escapism, especially as in those early months everything felt so out of control and crazy!

It’s the people that make it

Meeting an amazing group of bloggers was a real turning point for me, and gave me lots more confidence in what I am writing. Since becoming a mum, I’ve come across competitiveness more times than I’d care to admit and the idea of starting to write about my experiences was quite daunting. I love that with these girls there is no competition, just lots of encouragement and support. In particular, Mummy in a Tutu, Island Living 365 and Beauty Baby and Me have all been incredibly kind to me and I feel very lucky to have met them – you all rock!

Self-doubt is totally normal

How many times have I written something and thought….

“aaaaargh I think this is rubbish. I’m rubbish. I think I might pack in my blog”

I have to admit, this has happened quite a few times! But it’s so comforting to know that we all feel like that sometimes. We are our worst critic and those feelings are normal, it means we care about what we are writing and want to get it right. This was one of the best messages I took home from BritMums Live, keep doing what you love doing 🙂

Don’t get obsessed with stats…but take notice when something works!

It’s taken me a while to stop checking my stats every day – it’s a bit like the blog version of me stepping on the scales every morning. So if you see the figure you like, your day is amazing and you’re walking around like “hey, look at me and my amazing blog” and if it’s not great then you beat yourself up all day. So I stopped doing it and only check once a week now. However I have written a couple of things (here and here in case you missed it!) which people said they loved reading, and that feedback is so useful to know what works for me.

Celebrate your achievements, however big or small

I’m a big fan of celebrating the little things, and I try to do this with my blog too. Just a little pat on the back, and there’s been lots to be happy about over the past few months. In particular, writing a couple of posts for The Huffington Post, seeing my page views increase, reaching 2,000 followers on Twitter and starting a YouTube channel (which still needs lots of practice but I love all the same!) This has all made me very excited for another 3 months to come…

So there’s my thoughts on the first 3 months of blogging and here’s to another 3 months 😉 I’m absolutely loving it and can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. I hope it might help bloggers just starting out but do let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Well done on getting this far. I’ve been going about the same amount of time and I totally know what you mean about checking stats! It’s too easy to get caught up in being “successful” but I think the success seems to come when the blogger just stays true to themselves and posts consistently – which is what you do! You have a lovely blog and a gorgeous writing style so I just know that you are going to go on and do great things with Bridie by the Sea. #TribalLove xx

It’s amazing to read the ground that you’ve covered in such a short amount of time! I always hear good things about you and your writing is fab, so you’ve obviously got a huge talent for both writing and “blogmin”. I don’t know how you fit it all in, but please keep going for another 3 months, and another, and another

I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging for 3 months – you’re WAY ahead of me and I’ve been doing it for nearly a year! I also started my blog because I needed something that was mine while on maternity leave – I’m back at work now, but I’m still keeping up the blog because writing is so important to me. Also, the blogging community is great – such a diverse, funny, lovely and talented group of people! #stayclassymama

Look at you!! I had no idea this incredible blog was only three months old! My blog will be 1 this month, and many of these lessons that you’re learning now have taken me months to learn. You really are doing so well, and I can’t wait to see where you are 3 more months from now! Thanks for the awesome advice <3 #StayClassyMama

  14. June 30, 2016 / 7:46 pm

wow Bridie I had no idea you were so new to blogging – you’ve achieved so much! Wish I had your approach to stats – I check all the time! Well done on everything you’ve achieved. So interesting about the 3 month approach being the time that most people stop a blog – interestingly I almost stopped because I got a bit scared by the whole social media aspect as actually in real life I’m quite private – but I am so so glad I didn’t – I love it way too much! #stayclassy

You are so right about it being cathartic. I am six month into blogging, eight months into motherhood and I still haven’t got round to buying a new laptop (mine is broken) and downloading WordPress, so I’m still just writing my ponderings on an iPad once a week. But it makes me feel I am doing something creative and I have virtually met some lovely people who help me understand it’s not just me who finds it a struggle sometimes. Thanks for guest hosting. #Stayclassymama

This is incredible! You’ve done such an amazing job and in just 3 months! You should definitely be very proud of yourself 🙂 I’ve officially been bogging for just over a week now (literally 2 blogs ha ha) and would be over the moon if I manage to achieve half of what you have! And all while being a new mom…hardest and best job in the world and you are most definitely not alone! x

I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging for three months – you’ve achieved so much in that time! I think I’d only just started to discover the blogging community and linkies when I was three months in – let alone managed to go to a blogging conference and become part of a tribe! The advice not to get obsessed with stats is spot on – it’s not always easy to follow but it’s so liberating once you learn to let go of it all. Congratulations on reaching the three month mark and here’s to the next milestone! #triballove

I am so glad you’re enjoying blogging, it seems to have given you so much which is brilliant. And I love reading your writing, it comes across very natural. I wouldn’t worry about finding a niche, most of my favourite blogs don’t have a niche!! I still can’t believe you’ve only been going a few months, it seems like you’ve achieved so much. #StayClassyMama

    • July 2, 2016 / 6:19 pm

Thank you lovely, especially for what you say about my writing. So glad about the niche too, the only niche is ‘me’ haha xx

  23. July 3, 2016 / 8:05 am

Bridie I love this post. I have felt EXACTLY the same so many times. I started blogging in February as a catharsis more than anything, and suddenly realised that people were actually saying they enjoyed it and to keep it up. A trip to #BML16 and I was suddenly at once overwhelmed and incredibly inspired (my blog is nothing, what am I doing!? vs. but you love it and all these people love what we do too and that’s great – look at all the support!). So number 1 thing I did was start going on Twitter a bit more and I’ve discovered all these amazing linky parties and wonderful people who are so supportive and lovely. I take heed about your note on stats though – blogging about mindfulness as one of my ‘things’, I’ve been increasingly aware of the tension between being kind to yourself and not worrying about what others think, vs. constantly checking your stats and likes on a post that talks about that!! So I’m trying to compartmentalise a bit, and just slot checking into one part of the day, and then forget about it. Whoops I appear to have written an essay – just really connected with what you said and I’m really glad I’ve come across your blog today. Hope to meet you at a conference in future! Take care, Amy x #stayclassymama

Oh thank you for such a gorgeous comment – this has really made my day. I’m so glad you liked my post – the blogging community are amazing aren’t they? I totally agree with what you say about mindfulness, I’m still working on that too…my blog is very personal so sometimes I find myself feeling so worried about what other people think of what I write, instead of just being proud that this is me and I love writing! I really hope to meet you at the next conference, I’m heading up to Blog On in September next xx
